Overview
Pharmacy assistants assist pharmacists in ordering, preparing, and dispensing medications at the pharmacy.
A pharmacy assistant assists licensed pharmacists and pharmacist technicians in the processing of prescriptions. Assistants often perform clerical and organizing tasks such as answering phones, filling out and filing paperwork, running cash registers, and stocking shelves.
To work as a pharmacist assistant, one must first complete the requisite training by taking the required courses.

Occupational Qualification: SAQA 72049 Basic Pharmacist Assistance
Level 3
Specialisation: Institution / Hospital Pharmacy
Requirements: The requirements for registering National Certificate: Pharmacist assistant basic are as follows:
- Minimum grade 10 (standard 8)( pass in Maths and English with 50% and above
- Have to be employed in a Hospital / Clinic pharmacy or have a Pharmacy Workplace that you will spend the rest of your training (1 year or above)
- Council Approved Tutor and
- Council Approved Training premises
ID copy or Passport with permit (foreign students)
- Proof of qualification
- Valid Tutor Certificate
- Valid Proof of premises approval and
- Proof of payment of Council Registration Fees

2. National Certificate Pharmacist Assistance
This training program results in a national qualification as a Pharmacist Assistant (Basic), NQF level 3 in the SAQA Field: Health Sciences and Social Services, and SAQA Subfield: Preventative, Curative, Promotive, and Developmental and Health Services. Health Science Academy provides pharmacy education in all four sectors: community, hospital/institutional, manufacturing, and wholesale/distribution. The South African Pharmacy Council has authorized the course and Health Science Academy has been accredited as a supplier of education and training.
3. Further Education and Training: Pharmacist’s Assistance
This training program leads to a national qualification as a Pharmacist Assistant (Post Basic), NQF level 4 in the SAQA Field: Health Sciences and Social Services, and SAQA Subfield: Preventative, Curative, Promotive, and Developmental Health Services. The Health Science Academy provides training in the community as well as the hospital/institutional sectors. The South African Pharmacy Council has authorized the course and Health Science Academy has been accredited as a supplier of education and training.
4. ADVANCED CERTIFICATE: PHARMACY TECHNICAL SUPPORT (NQF LEVEL 6) [NMU]
