How To Cancel UIF. Complete Guide

What Is UIF? 

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) gives short-term relief to workers when they become unemployed or are unable to work because of maternity, adoption and parental leave, or illness.

Who can claim from the UIF FUND?

Employees who are registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and who have been contributing to the Fund can claim.

What kind of benefits is covered by the UIF?

The UIF covers five kinds of benefits namely:

  • Unemployment benefits;
  • Illness benefits;
  • Maternity benefits;
  • Death benefits

How Much Will An Employee Recieve? 

You can claim for up to 238 days if you have contributed to the Fund for four years or longer. If you contributed for a shorter length of time, you can claim one day for every six days you worked while contributing to the Fund.

You can only claim up to 121 days of maternity leave if you take it. The Fund pays you a portion of your wage/salary earned while contributing to the fund. The maximum amount that can be paid is 58 per cent of your daily earnings.

How To Cancel UIF

Step 1: Fill in the form

Employers must fill in the UI-19 form (the same form you use to register workers). Indicate in the last two columns why and from when your worker(s) do not work for you anymore.

Step 2: Send in the form

Employers can send the form to the UIF by:

Step 3: Follow up

Call the UIF at 012 337 1680 or your nearest labour centre to find out whether they have received your form and have de-registered you or your workers. Keep your employer reference number and the date when your workers stopped working ready when you call.

The UIF will only de-register the workers. If employers want to register new workers, they can use the same employer reference number they received before. If employers do not want to register workers again, they must tell the UIF to remove them from the database in writing.​
