He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa to the late South African veteran actress, Mary Twala, and the late actor and comedian, Ndaba Mhlongo.

He gained prominence and massive exposure after his appearance on the musical and political film titled Sarafina.

Due to the work of his parents, Somizi gained inspiration to explore more in the entertainment industry. His acting career began at a tender age (13).

At that age he appeared on a film titled Scavengers in 1987. Fast forward, he got the opportunity to join the Sarafina film. That was where he gained national appeal.
