About South African Revenue Services
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is the government’s revenue collection agency. It is in charge of the country’s tax and customs systems, as well as enforcing compliance with relevant regulations. The SARS Act 34 of 1997 established it as a “state organ inside the public administration, but as an institution outside the public service.” It consequently has extensive administrative autonomy but is subject to the Minister of Finance’s policy supervision. SARS effectively controls, administers, and implements the tax regime that the Minister and National Treasury have devised.
Functions Of SARS
In terms of the SARS Act, the main functions of SARS are to:
- collect all tax and customs revenue due to the state;
- enforce compliance with tax and customs legislation; and
- facilitate legitimate trade through the customs service.
Among others, SARS administers the personal income tax, corporate income tax, capital gains tax, value-added tax, customs and excise duties, skills development levies, environmental levies, unemployment insurance fund contributions, and employment tax incentives.

Minimum Requirement For SARS Jobs
Below are some of the prerequisites needed to apply for SARS jobs.
- Experience in Data Engineering / Business Data Intelligence / Data Science
- Intermediate (practical application) technical expertise regarding data processes, data cleaning, analysis, reporting, data models, and database design and testing
- Knowledge of and experience with reporting packages (MS SQL studio and associated tools like SSIS, SSRS and SQL programming language is must), Knowledge and experience in R, Python, or any other statistical tools are preferable.
- Intermediate (practical application) knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, SAS, R etc.)
- Intermediate (practical application) Data warehouse knowledge
- Be proficient in the application of:
- Basic Data Migration
- Basic Data Visualization
- Business Intelligence Methodologies
- Database Knowledge
- Intermediate (practical application) Programming Skills ¡V i.e. SQL, C#, JavaScript/HTML5 Front-end Web development and/or Python, R, etc.
- Microsoft skills (Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
