What Is Mandela Coins
The South African Mint has issued two new coins commemorating President Nelson Mandela.
The coins are now available, according to a statement made by the South African Mint on Monday (23 April), and may be purchased at the South African Mint’s retail store in Centurion, Elegance Jewellers in Melrose Arch, and other pop-up stores in malls across South Africa.
The R50 bronze alloy coin depicts him as a young lawyer, whilst the R50 sterling-silver coin depicts him as the country’s first democratically elected president.
Tumi Tsehlo, MD of the South African Mint, observed, “The R127 bronze alloy money tells its own tale.” “The coin’s pricing was designed to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela’s legacy and to pay it forward.”
“The entry level bronze alloy coin is valued at R127 to commemorate Mandela’s birth 100 years ago and to recall the 27 long and lonely years he spent in jail.” According to Tshelo, “for each coin purchased, R27 (VAT-free) will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.”
The two collector coins are packaged in ‘coin blister’ envelopes that include images of Mandela throughout his life.
They are part of the wider ‘Celebrating South Africa’ collection; the first coin in the series, depicting Mandela’s comrade-in-struggle OR Tambo, was produced last year to commemorate the centenary of his birth.
